Introduction to New World (2013)
If you’re a fan of The Godfather (especially the first two films) or Scarface, or simply love gangster movies, you can’t miss New World (2013). I watched it primarily because of its impressive cast, but also because it’s a great option when you’re waiting for dramas to finish. 😉

Plot Summary: New World (2013)
New World is a gripping Korean film that centers around an undercover operation to dismantle the notorious Goldmoon mafia clan. The movie kicks off with the sudden assassination of Seok Dong Chool, the first leader, leaving the second-in-command contenders vying for power.
Undercover Agent Lee Ja Sung: A Risky Mission
Lee Ja Sung, played by Lee Jung Jae (The Face Reader, The Thieves), is a skilled police officer chosen to infiltrate the mafia organization. He is tasked with working undercover for six years, putting his own life and the lives of his loved ones at risk. His mission? To take down the leaders of the Goldmoon clan for the National Police Agency.
The Power Struggle: Jung Chung vs. Lee Joong Goo
Ja Sung’s assignment places him in the inner circle of one of the candidates vying to inherit the mafia clan’s power: Jung Chung, portrayed by Hwang Jung Min (Korean Peninsula, A Bittersweet Life). Jung Chung is a ruthless character, but his strategy and style allow him to secure his place in the organization.
The other candidate, Lee Joong Goo, is portrayed by Park Seong Woong (Bridal Mask, Cain & Abel), a man who gains influence through careful maneuvers to win the support of the shareholders. Both men have no moral compass and will stop at nothing to seize control.
Kan Hyung Chul: The Villain in Disguise
Choi Min Sik (Oldboy, I Saw the Devil) plays Kan Hyung Chul, a character who, although not a traditional villain, engages in morally questionable actions. His role in Operation New World requires him to blur the lines of cruelty in order to accomplish his goals.
Themes of Power and Corruption in New World (2013)
New World is a cinematic exploration of the lengths one must go to in order to dismantle a corrupt power. The film highlights the moral gray areas that law enforcement must navigate, demonstrating that sometimes, to destroy an evil empire, you have to get your hands dirty. And even then, there’s no guarantee that the outcome will be the right one.
Cinematography and Filming Techniques
The film’s cinematography is notable for its originality. It features well-placed camera movements and static shots that create surprising effects for viewers, adding depth to the storytelling. The visuals manage to convey solemnity with minimal material, enhancing the overall atmosphere.

Final Thoughts on New World (2013)
New World is a fast-paced action film with a plot full of twists and intrigue. While it’s essential to pay attention to the finer details—since seemingly minor actions later take on significant meaning—it’s definitely worth the watch. If you’re a fan of action, blood, and gangster films, New World should be at the top of your list.
