Introduction
I originally watched this movie because I was looking for a comedy, and it also happened to be the first on the updated list of the site where I usually watch dramas. The cast didn’t immediately catch my attention, except for one or two names, and since the story revolves around a competition, I was afraid the plot would overshadow the humor.
And, well… I ended up crying. Who cries in a comedy, right? But in the fantastical universe of Korean productions, anything can happen!

Synopsis
Born to Sing follows the lives of several residents in the small town of Gimhae, where the famous (and real) TV show National Singing Contest is holding auditions. The arrival of the contest brings excitement, challenges, and dreams to the townspeople, who now have a chance to be on national television.
Main Stories and Characters
The film intertwines four different storylines, each with its own charm:
Bong Nam & Mi Ae – A Dream Beyond Survival
Bong Nam (Kim In Kwon – The Tower, Almost Che, You’re Beautiful) and his wife Mi Ae (Ryu Hyun Kyung – Cyrano Agency, Boy, MAMA) lead a modest life. She works full-time as a hairdresser, while he is a designated driver, studying to get a license that will allow him to help with her business. However, Bong Nam’s true passion is music, and this contest may be the opportunity he has been waiting for all his life.
Hyun Ja & Dong Soo – Overcoming Stage Fright
The shy and reserved Hyun Ja (Lee Cho Hee – Bleak Night) and her co-worker Dong Soo (Yoo Yeon Seok – Answer Me 1994, Horror Stories, Gu Family Book) are forced by their boss to participate in the contest as a marketing stunt for a new product. Hyun Ja, who struggles with extreme shyness, is chosen to represent their company, while Dong Soo is assigned to train her. Their performance turns into an awkward and humorous spectacle due to the nature of the product, making it even harder for Hyun Ja to shine.
Grandfather Oh & Bo Ri – A Heartwarming Bond
One of the most touching stories is that of Grandpa Oh and his granddaughter Bo Ri. They live together in a small house on the outskirts of town. Though aging and suffering from memory loss, Grandpa Oh still treasures the moments he spends singing with Bo Ri. Their bond is pure and emotional, adding a beautiful depth to the film. The adorable Bo Ri is played by Kim Hwan Hee (Lee Soon Shin, My Love My Family, My One and Only), while her grandfather is portrayed by Oh Hyeon Kyeong (The Concubine, The Thorn Birds, Parallel Life).
Joo Ha Na – The Mayor’s Unexpected Reality Check
Lastly, we have the town’s eccentric mayor, Joo Ha Na, played by the incredible Kim Soo Mi (Incarnation of Money, What Happened in Bali, Vampire Idol). Encouraged by her assistant to participate, she believes that her status and talent should grant her a direct spot in the contest. However, reality soon proves her wrong in a humorous and humbling way.
Special Appearances & Music Legends
The real host of National Singing Contest, the legendary Song Hae, makes a special appearance in the film, along with members of Boohwal and K-Rock legend Kim Tae Won. Their presence adds an authentic touch to the story.
Review and Final Thoughts
Born to Sing is an entertaining film with excellent performances that make the characters’ lives and struggles feel incredibly real. While it has a few loose ends, it remains a well-crafted, lighthearted, and fun watch. The movie blends humor with emotional moments, making it more than just a simple comedy.
If you’re looking for something well-made, heartwarming, and fun, this is a great choice. Highly recommended for a lighthearted movie night!
